The Stratosphere in Las Vegas is located at the north end of the strip. People tend to frequent the casinos located near the middle of the strip where the monorail is located. The casinos near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue also draw more tourists due to their central location. Although a bit out of the way, the Stratosphere is worth the trip to the north end of the strip. I recently visited this casino and enjoyed my visit.

Pros of the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino

Being at the north end of the strip and away from the monorail, the Stratosphere is not as busy as some of the other casinos. Parking is also easier due to less traffic. For those not staying at the hotel, the Deuce, the Las Vegas mini bus transport, takes visitors directly in front of the casino,so it is easily accessible.

The Stratosphere has what is considered probably one of the best restaurants in the Vegas area. The Top of the World is located in the tower of the hotel and gives a 360 view of Las Vegas and the desert skyline. If you want a quicker meal the hotel hosts a buffet restaurant called The Buffet. Although the name is lacking in creativity, the food I ate their was awesome. The Buffet offers a full range of options from hot food to quick food such as pizzas and chicken nuggets. If you are in a hurry to get back to the tables and slots, The Pizzeria might be a great food option.

For those not interested in gambling, the hotel offers four thrill rides. The tower has four rides: The SkyJump, Insanity, X-Scream and the Big Shot. The Sky Jump is a tantamount to a sky dive, taking riders 855 feet below to the base of the tower. The Insanity spins riders in the air, free hanging at up to 3G speeds. If a teeter totter sounds fun, imagine the X-Scream ride at 866 feet above the ground. The Big Shot catapults the rider 165 feet in the air. Tickets can be purchased individually, for all four rides or as an unlimited all day package.

Cons of the Stratosphere

Because it is an older hotel and out of the way from the main tourist area, it seemed that the hotel was not well kept. Furniture and carpets were fine, but showed wear and tear. In some hallways, paint was peeling. The window had a bit of mold behind the window seal, but it may have been due to the fact that humidity is high in Vegas and mold is hard to control.

Some of the pay outs on tables appeared to be less than other casinos. It appeared that not many people were not cashing in on the slot machines, but machines were full and the tables were very active.

The positives outweighed the negatives. I would suggest that anyone who wants an all inclusive Las Vegas vacation at a budget rate, make a trek to the Stratosphere. Before visiting, call the casino or check online for discounts or specials. A trip to the Stratosphere may well be worth your time.

The bilibo is a toy designed in Switzerland. It’s a strange, egg-shaped plastic device that comes in a wide variety of bright colors. What do children do with it? Well, that’s the whole purpose of the toy. They can use it in whatever way they choose.

The bilibo is intended to be used as an open ended toy. This allows children the freedom to tap into their creativity when playing. It does not come with instructions and has no batteries that cause it to make noise, light up or move on its own. It is a child powered toy.

I ordered a lime green bilibo for my daughter after reading reviews of it from other mom’s of children with emotional difficulties on a parenting forum. My husband thought I was insane when he saw it. He thought I wasted thirty dollars on a big, green, plastic bowel.

Our daughter loves it! Here are some of the ways he plays with it:

  • She uses it as a chair, stool or step.
  • She sits in it and rocks back and forth.
  • She spins around in circles in it.
  • She wears it as a hat.
  • It becomes a cradle for her dolls.
  • She fills it with water and dumps it at the pool. She also enjoys seeing how long it takes to sink.
  • She uses it as a basket and throws little balls, stuffed animals or balls of paper into it.
  • She uses it as a basket. It is currently filled with socks that she got distracted from putting in her drawer on the way to her room.

It is a very durable toy. It is great for both inside and outside play. While it seems to be intended for preschoolers, she’s actually in elementary school and it is holding up great to the wear and tear of regular use. The rocking, spinning and balancing that can be done in the bilibo helps her release anxious energy. I love that engages her mind and creativity as well.

Fresh Picks features the latest luxury properties admitted into the Kiwi Collection. This week we walk like an Egyptian through Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan.

Where: Located in Aswan, Egypt, at the Nile’s first cataract—hence the name—the hotel is perched atop a pink granite shelf offering views of sailboats and nearby Elephantine Island.

What: Late last year the hotel reopened after a three-year reno, and while it’s a ways from Alexandria where Cleopatra reigned, it’s fit for a pharaoh. To suit those with classical tastes, there are 76 suites in the Old Palace Wing, and for guests keen on contemporary, there are the 62 more modern rooms in the newer Nile Wing. There are eight restaurants and bars to dine in, including 1902, the hotel’s signature restaurant serving French cuisine under an awe-inspiring Arabian dome ceiling. Their new So Spa features a three-room hammam, eight treatment rooms and a pool.

Who: History buffs and serious souk shoppers (travelers boast Aswan’s is the best in Egypt in terms of prices and experience).

Why: As one of the three oldest civilizations in the world, Egypt should be on everyone’s bucket list… and not only the pyramids at Giza.

Hi,

I got this PC from my cousin, it’s supposed to go to my gran as she’s using an ancient one. This one’s not the newest either but would be a huge improvement.

It’s a Packard Bell IMEDIA 2669

It came faulty though. It had Windows MCE on it and the Keyboard and Mouse wouldn’t work. It would boot to my cousin’s login screen but K+M didn’t work regardless of being plugged in via ps/2 or USB (at the back).

I’ve now got them working via USB at the front. There’s only 2 USB’s at the front though. So I installed a PCI card. And now there’s 4 at the back. The 4 at the back (PCI card) work fine in windows but u can’t get in to the BIOS with it. The keyboard has to be in the front to enter the BIOS.

Anyway, the plan was to install Windows 7 on it as it should be capable. 2gb ram, Pentium D 3ghz. So Windows 7 home was purchased for it.

When trying to install windows 7 home, the K+M stop working quite early on, where you are asked to choose your language.

I’ve been googling this a lot and one suggestion was a faulty PSU and to check voltages, 5v,12v and 3.3v (something like that). They were all within 10% so that doesn’t seem to be the problem.

I should also let you know, one of the 4 original USB ports on the back (the motherboard ones) seems to have samage to it. Like part of it’s been pulled out. I haven’t tested the ethernet, spdif and another connector but both the PS/2 and USB on the back are faulty.

Ideally I’d want to get the ports at the back working, but I’d make do with just installing Windows 7. Just not sure how to go about it. I’ve heard about being able to install with USB but how do I do that with the disc?

Is there anything I should try? I’ve reset the BIOS, and I even tried taking the motherboard battery out for a minute.

Just to be clear, the 2 USB ports at the front work, the 4 I added at the back work. The 4 originals at the back dont and the ps/2 don’t. The 2 at the front are the only ones that can access the Bios. And none seem to work during the Windows 7 installation.

Cheers for reading and please respond with ideas/suggestions, even if it’s a long shot.

This U100 code and transmission fault light illuminated starts rather interesting. The fleet owners of this vehicle had a training session scheduled for their newly purchased Snap-on ProLink-IQ (NEXIQ). The company rules for training on a new piece of equipment for any fleet operation are no faulty vehicles for lab activities. This rule is so the faulty vehicle doesn’t derail the training and the subject vehicle becomes the focus instead of meeting the training objectives set for the class.

First day of training the shop supervisor informs me that the equipment is faulty. This is not good news because everyone in the training needs to operate the equipment. I conduct a quick check on the equipment and everything is in order. This training is conducted with a ProLink-IQ being operated by each student (one per student).

The training goes as planned and the students mastered the navigation of all the available functions of the ProLink-IQ on Heavy-duty vehicles and Global OBDII. We found ourselves with some extra class time and with the new understanding of the equipment “dove” into the troubled Freightliner.

First thing the students realized is that during the initial communications the scan tool did not pick up all the ECUs active in the vehicle. They cleared the U100 code and did not start the vehicle and performed a key-on-engine-off (KOEO) communication scan. The vehicle listed all the ECUs present. Once the vehicle was started and the U100 set we no longer could communicate with the Antilock Brake System (ABS) or Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) system. We pulled the J1939 data bus schematics to see how the ECU network was communicating.

We performed a quick check on all the terminators and found them to be within specifications. We then studied the wiring schematics and the ABS/TPMS received its vehicle speed from the TCM. We applied a lab Scope (VantagePro) to this circuit and monitored bus communication and watched the signal from the TPMS system become completely corrupt. The shop technician at this point confessed that he had already plugged in a TCM and it did not fix the problem and replaced the vehicle speed sensor. We did a continuity test on the communications wire between the TCM and the TPSM and while wiggling the harness saw the continuity disappear and reappear. We ran a new wire and the case of the U100 code transmission light illuminating was repaired. I checked-in with the shop several weeks later and the truck has been down the road with no problems. The shop uses the ProLink-IQ everyday and with greater success.

Lesson learned: Never just replace parts. If using a scan tool you are not familiar with, get help or the proper training so the tool can enhance your abilities.

Part leaks from the next-generation iPhone are beginning to ramp up, with component vendor SW-BOX.com having recently added a new headphone jack/earpiece/Wi-Fi cable part claimed to be from the device (via Cydia Blog). The new part joins a claimed micro-SIM tray that surfaced on the site several weeks ago and home buttons that appeared on several sites late last month.

If the new part is indeed legitimate, it does represent a significant departure from the component organization in the current iPhone. In the iPhone 4 and 4S, the headphone jack, volume buttons, and mute switch are grouped together on a single component, while this new part associates the headphone jack with the earpiece speaker and Wi-Fi cabling.

It is not terribly unusual for Apple to tweak the organization of components, and the new part leak offers essentially no information on any potential changes to the device’s form factor, but with part leaks beginning to accelerate it may not be long before more substantial parts begin showing up.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. consumer sentiment rose to its highest in more than four years in early May as Americans remained upbeat about the job market, a survey released on Friday showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary May reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment improved to 77.8 from 76.4 in April, topping forecasts for 76.2.

It was the highest reading since January 2008.

Despite the recent slowdown in job growth, nearly twice as many consumers reported hearing about new job gains than said they had heard about recent job losses, the survey said.

The data suggests that either more positive numbers on the labor market will be seen soon, or that consumers have ratcheted up their expectations too high, survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement.

“The most likely prospect is that job growth returns to a modest pace of gains and consumers trim their overly optimistic expectations, with not much change in overall confidence until after the November (presidential) election and the decisions on tax policy,” said Curtin.

Consumers’ buying plans for vehicles and durable goods also improved at the beginning of the month, with 65 percent saying buying conditions were favorable, the highest in more than a year.

U.S. stocks <.SPX> held onto losses immediately after the data, before trading at flat levels. Treasuries maintained their gains, and the dollar rose against the yen.

The survey’s barometer of current economic conditions also rose to its highest in more than four years, jumping to 87.3 from 82.9.

The gauge of consumer expectations slipped to 71.7 from 72.3, however.

Consumers’ assessment of their personal financial situations remained dismal, with just 29 percent of households saying their finances had improved, unchanged from a year ago.

The survey’s one-year inflation expectation continued to ease after a run-up earlier in the year, falling to 3.1 percent from 3.2 percent. The survey’s five-to-10-year inflation outlook edged up to 3.0 percent from 2.9 percent.

In a recent letter to over ninety advertisers who are likely to buy time with America’s Got Talent, the Parents Television Council said the following: “Programs like ‘AGT’ have offered millions of American families brief respite from the otherwise-ubiquitous stream of violent, profane and sexually explicit content on primetime. NBC’s decision to add Mr. Stern to ‘AGT’ will probably result in a sharp increase in explicit content and we urge you to be mindful when considering a media buy.”

While that doesn’t openly require that advertisers refrain from buying air time with NBC, the message is clear. Of course, the Parents Television Council is probably only serving America’s Got Talent and Howard Stern by making these sorts of public overtures. Controversial, polarizing characters drive television ratings, regardless of the format. America’s Got Talent is going to remain a family show, except that now it is also going to attract a more edgy audience who wants to see Stern perform on prime time television.

And once he demonstrates the ability to navigate the confines of prime time television while maintaining his sharp wit and honesty, it’s going to be extremely difficult for advertisers to stay away. Even the promos for America’s Got Talent have an almost Disney-like quality to them. NBC has been playing up Stern’s edginess, but it will be his heartfelt honesty and everyman qualities that will win over the masses when the show premieres on May 14.

Whether Stern’s presence is enough to move the needle for AGT remains to be seen. But the potential is there for huge success and a completely new level of fame and recognition for Howard Stern.

Top U.S. officials reiterated the American position of refusing to negotiate with al Qaeda in hostage situations. White House spokesman Jay Carney said that authorities were still trying to coordinate Weinstein’s release, but provided no details as to what efforts were in place. The video, which shows Weinstein being held against a white backdrop, was directed at U.S. President Barack Obama and Weinstein recites what sound like prepared remarks asking for the president to step in and give his captors what they want in return for his freedom.

It is believed that the al Qaeda group holding Weinstein wants the release of specific prisoners in exchange for releasing Weinstein. Weinstein has been held by al Qaeda since August, when he was kidnapped from the Pakistani city of Lahore. He was living there as an advisor and consultant for J.E. Austin Associates, a U.S. firm that works with various Pakistani government agencies and private corporations.

Although the video showed Weinstein in what appeared to be reasonable health, it’s unclear exactly when the video was shot. He does note in the video that he has been given his required medication and that he has been cared for by his captors. The only realistic option on the table from the U.S. perspective is to try to establish back-channel communications with the al Qaeda cell holding Weinstein and to try to quietly negotiate his release via alternative means. A rescue attempt would seem unlikely, unless Weinstein’s location is determined to be outside of Pakistan.

Imagine how people would look without a slight smile lighting up their face or the frown that lets you know they are disappointed. What if we weren’t able to let our eyes twinkle in recognition of the one we loved, or laugh out loud to our heart’s content at the petty surprises of life? The picture that comes in front of my eyes just describing this is a cardboard face devoid of any sort of emotions, drained out of life forever. Would you like it this way? Nah! At least I wouldn’t want to have a blank expression on my face 24/7.

I, personally enjoy looking at the different expressions around me; the smiles, the tears, expressions of satisfaction, of excitement, relief and sometimes of guilt. Just observing people in their most human form is enough to jolt me to a state of absolute awakening, especially when my day itself is gloomy.

In our day-to-day life, we try to camouflage our emotions with words. However, there’s a truth in the eyes only a few can see, the words that they speak are silent glimpses to the true emotions we hide. These emotions are nothing but reactions to situations and no matter how hard you try to hide, you will never succeed in hiding these microexpressions.

*Click on the images for a better view.

What are Microexpressions

Expressions that last for less than 1/25th of a second are termed as microexpressions. They are described as brief involuntary emotions experienced by an individual when placed in a ‘do-or-die’ situation. In other words, microexpressions are observed for a minuscule moment on the face of an individual in extreme situations. Apart from the basic emotions like sadness, joy, dread, surprise, disgust, anger, disdain, microexpressions include emotions like delight, embarrassment, exhilaration, guilt, pride, contentment, shame and relief.

AngerDisgustPrideFrustrationExcitementSadnessJoySurprise

Types of Microexpressions

If only one spared a moment to think about the phrase, “Actions speak louder than words”, they would see the truth behind it. Just like a flash of lightning lighting up the sky, a flash of emotion can determine the mood and emotion of the person. Besides, research has shown that about 90% of our communication revolves around non-verbal communication. Microexpressions are classified into three broad categories namely:

Simulated ExpressionSimulated Expression

Facial expressions that are devoid of genuine emotions are termed as simulated expressions. By simulation, we understand that the emotions expressed are forced and not real/genuine. Microexpressions of a forced smile especially to pose for a picture, etc., come under this category.

Neutralized ExpressionNeutralized Expression

The individual prefers to have a bland look on the face rather that portraying any sort of emotion on the face. The real emotions are counterbalanced or suppressed in this type of microexpression. A typical bored face sans expression would fit into this category.

Masked ExpressionMasked Expression

Just like a clown, who has his face plastered with a permanent smile, this type of microexpression is about absolute masking of emotions. This type of expression leaves no scope to portray the actual expressions.

Detecting Microexpressions

Being able to distinguish the truth from the lie is a herculean task and should we say that it takes a lot of practice. As microexpressions last for a fraction of a second, constantly observing them can be a strenuous task. However, the task is not reserved for professionals alone; just about anyone who has a roving eye can catch and detect these microexpressions. The only thing you need to remember is that every time you have a conversation with anyone, keenly observe the person’s face. Ensure you do not appear to be glaring at the person you are observing. You can understand the real feelings of the person with these simple steps.
» A Smile Can do Wonders
A genuine smile is reflected in the eyes of the individual. In case, the smile does not fill up your subject’s eyes, you should immediately understand that they are lying or hiding something from you. Notice the ‘crow-feet’ at the edge of the eyes; that’s where the secret lies!
» Focus on the Window to the Soul
Maintaining eye contact with your subject is very important and this you have been told many a time in the past, but you duly ignored it. The eyes are a sure bet on whether a person is lying or hiding something from you; well, the eyes are not simply called the windows to the soul. Notice the way the eyes move when the subject talks to you. When the person is lying/sad and is trying to hide this emotion from you, his/her eyeballs will constantly move from one corner to the other.
» Ah! The Wrath of the Gods!
How do you understand if you have angered someone? Observe the lips of the person in front of you; if something angers them, it will show with narrowing of the lips into a thin line. Besides, there will be a flash of intense glare in the eye, which will tell you to tread cautiously.
» Twitch twitch!
The slightest twitch should be your giveaway. To catch that microexpression, go with your instincts open; you will observe that twitch in the eye, in the lips and you know something’s amiss.

FrustrationBoredSadDesperationHappyDisappointmentContentmentMischievous

The only way to catch those microexpressions is to keep your eyes wide open. Besides, knowing how to read microexpressions will help you know if someone is lying to you. By the way, do not stop practicing your skills of micro-observing people around you; after all, practice will make you an expert ‘lie detector’ at least. Here’s where I sign off and get back to my favorite pastime of observing the people around me and leaving you to pursue it too.
